It can be quite disconcerting, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to address this issue.

Sometimes, a drained battery can cause the screen to go black. Ensure your iPhone is charged by connecting it to a power source.

Check Your Battery

Certain apps may crash, leading to a black screen. If you suspect this, force-close any open apps.

Incompatible Apps

On newer iPhones without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to close apps. For iPhones with a Home button, double-tap the Home button and swipe up on the problematic app.

A temporary glitch can cause unresponsiveness. In this case you will have to force restart your Phone.

Force Restart

For iPhone 8 or later (including the newer SE models), quickly press and release the volume up key, then the volume down key. Next, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, press and hold both the side and volume down buttons until the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 6s or earlier (including the older SE), press and hold the Home and the side or top buttons until the Apple logo appears.

Connect your iPhone to a PC or Mac and put it into Recovery Mode. Then, update or reset it using Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes (macOS Mojave and earlier or a PC).
